As of February 2025, Canada offers a variety of solar incentives at both federal and provincial levels to encourage the adoption of renewable energy. Here's a comprehensive overview:


Federal Solar Rebates and Incentives 2025

Canada Greener Homes Loan

  • Details: Offers a zero-interest loan of up to $40,000 to cover the costs of solar panel installations and other energy-efficient upgrades.
  • Eligibility: Homeowners must complete an energy audit and implement recommended upgrades.
  • Application Process: Apply through the Canada Greener Homes Portal.

Alberta

City: Banff

Rebate: Banff Solar Production Incentive

Summary: The Town of Banff currently offers a $0.75 per watt rebate on solar energy systems, up to a maximum of 20kW. 

Details: The Town of Banff Solar PV Program is a post-install rebate program, with funding based on the size of solar system installed. Eligible participants install a solar PV system on their home or business, and then receive a financial rebate from the Town, based on the size of the solar system installed. The Town provides eligible participants with a rebate of $750/kilowatt (kW) of solar capacity installed, to a maximum of 20 kW.  

Terms & Conditions

  • All projects must meet development, building and electrical safety code requirements. Minimum installation requirements are a 2 kW solar electric system.
  • All electrical systems must be CSA or ULC approved for installation in Canada.
  • Applicants are responsible to complete the project and submit the necessary paperwork to receive the rebate, including a completed Microgeneration Agreement with Fortis.
  • Town of Banff Building and Development permits are required for solar panels but associated fees are waived.
  • Town of Banff Solar Panel Design Guidelines (PDF) describe requirements for the visual integration of solar panels on buildings for land use districts throughout the community.
  • Eligible applicants must commit to participate in sharing the story and data of their solar installation with the community in various ways including, but not limited to: articles in the local newspaper, Facebook, YouTube, and the Town of Banff website.

City: Canmore

Rebate: Solar Incentive Program – No longer accepting application

Summary: The City is offering up to $1,250 for a very limited number of homes in Canmore

City: Edmonton

Rebate: Edmonton Change Homes for Climate Solar Program MULTI-UNIT HOMES ONLY – Expired Dec 16 2024

Summary: The City is offering Edmonton multi-unit residential property owners $0.50/watt towards the cost of the system.

Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program (SHARP)

Details: Provides low-interest loans of up to $40,000 to seniors for home upgrades, including solar panel installations.

Eligibility: Alberta homeowners aged 65 or older with at least 25% equity in their primary residence.

Home Energy Retrofit Accelerator

Details: Provides rebates for energy-efficient upgrades, including solar panel installations. The program aims to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Eligibility: Residential property owners in Alberta.

Rebate Amount: Based on the type of upgrade and energy savings achieved.

British Columbia

CleanBC Rebates

Province Wide

Rebate: BC Hydro Solar & Battery Rebate Program

Summary: Rebates up to $5,000 on eligible grid-connected solar panels and up to an additional $5,000 for battery storage systems to qualifying residential customers.

Eligibility

  • The property must have a BC Hydro residential account
  • You must own the home. Tenanted properties are eligible but the rebate is paid to the registered property owner.  See landlord application process above.
  • Customers of other utilities within B.C., such as FortisBC or the City of New Westminster, are not eligible for these rebates.
  • The property must be a grid-connected residential home.
  • The property must be located in BC Hydro’s service territory [PDF, 176 KB] .
  • Eligible property types include:
    • Single-family detached dwellings.
    • Duplex, triplex, row home or townhomes.
    • Mobile homes that are fixed to a permanent foundation that are structurally complete with installed and connected plumbing, heating, electrical, water and sewer services, and with towing apparatus and axle removed.
  • Must be a new solar installation or add onto an existing solar system

Saskatchewan

Power Generation Partner Program (PGPP)

  • Details: The recently instituted Power Generation Partner Program (PGPP) offers a 20-year contract. This program replaced the earlier Small Power Producers Program and will be seeking new applicants each year to help Saskatchewan produce 35 MW of clean energy.
  • Bid Process: Applicants submit a bid price representing the amount they will be paid for the electricity they generate. The maximum bid is capped at $0.09830/kWh.

Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) for Clean Energy Projects

  • Details: The Canadian Income Tax Act provides a special, accelerated capital cost allowance (CCA) for clean energy generation equipment, including solar systems. This allows businesses to write off larger portions of the cost of a solar power system in the first years of ownership.
  • Classification: Solar systems qualify for Class 43.2, which can be written off at a 100% rate in the first year.

Canadian Renewable and Conservation Expenses (CRCE)

  • Details: Installation expenses for solar systems receive special tax treatment. Businesses can deduct the installation cost fully in the year incurred and generate a non-refundable tax credit. The credit can be carried forward indefinitely.

Net Metering Program

  • Details: Provides a one-to-one credit for excess solar energy fed back into the grid.
  • Eligibility: Residential and commercial properties with renewable energy systems.

Manitoba

Efficiency Manitoba Solar Rebate

  • Rebate Amount: $0.50 per direct current (DC) watt installed, up to a maximum of $5,000 per home.
  • Eligibility:
    • Your solar PV system is connected to Manitoba Hydro’s grid. 
    • The home is the primary residence for you or your tenant and is occupied year-round, and has been occupied for the last 12 months.
    • Your home is heated year-round.
    • Your home is a single-detached home, semi-detached home, mobile home on a permanent foundation, duplex, triplex, fourplex, or multiplex with its own meter.
    • Your solar PV system is connected to the primary residential energy meter that services your home.
    • Your contractor is registered with Efficiency Manitoba.

Ontario

Save on Energy—Net Metering
Details: Net metering program allows solar users to offset electricity costs by feeding surplus energy into the grid.
Eligibility: Homeowners and businesses with renewable energy systems.

Home Renovation Savings Program
Under this program, homeowners can receive up to $10,000 in rebates, covering up to 30% of the cost of qualifying home energy improvements. The program includes support for a variety of upgrades, such as:

Nova Scotia

Province Wide

Rebate: SolarHomes Program

Summary: Solar rebate of $0.30/W up to $3000 and battery rebate of $300/kWh up to $2500

Eligibility

  • The home must be owned by the program participant and either used as their principal residence or as their principal seasonal property. Rental properties are not eligible.
  • In the case of a new home that has not yet been constructed, the program participant must be the homeowner who will reside in that home.
  • Participants must be willing to participate in site visits from Efficiency Nova Scotia and/or their third-party representatives for quality assurance and evaluation purposes.
  • Battery storage system must consist of new equipment.
  • Battery storage systems must be designed and installed by SolarHomes registered installers.

New Brunswick

Province Wide

Rebate: Total Home Energy Savings Program

Summary: Rebate of $200 per kW up to $3000 along with several other efficiency rebates outside of solar (battery not included)

Eligibility

  • Grid connected projects must be registered into NB Power’s Net Metering program or the equivalent from the municipal electrical utilities (if applicable). More details on NB Power’s Net Metering program here: https://www.nbpower.com/en/products-services/net-metering/
  • Off-grid projects require approval from the Department of Public Safety Technical Inspection Services. Notify your Certified Energy Advisor early if you are considering an off-grid solar PV installation.
  • PV systems must be connected to an electrical panel supplying other loads in the home.
  • Incentives will be paid based on the gross installed capacity of the panels, as documented by the Energy Advisor, and agreed to in the Net Metering Interconnection Application.
  • The minimum panel capacity required for an incentive is 1 kW.  Incentive applies up to 15 kW of panel capacity ($3,000 max incentive).
  • Please keep documentation such as receipts or invoices from contractors that contain the following information. Alternatively, an NB Power Net Metering Interconnection Application contains this required information.
    • Manufacturer
    • Model number
    • Total number of panels
    • Wattage of each panel

Prince Edward Island

Province Wide

Rebate: Solar Electric Rebate Program

Summary: Solar rebate of $1000/kW up to a maximum of $10,000
